About the species
Meerkats live around eight years in the wild and 12 to 14 in captivity, with the maximum recorded being around 20.
They are immune to scorpion venom, can identify which prey are dangerous, and have a hunting success rate of about 50 per cent. By comparison, lions sit at around 30 per cent (St Andrews University).
