What this place is

Wales Ape & Monkey Sanctuary is a true sanctuary, not a zoo. It exists for the animals that arrive here. They stay for the rest of their lives.

The basics

How it runs

We were founded in 1998 by Jan and Graham Garen. The sanctuary specialises in the care and protection of primates, and also takes in other animals that have nowhere else to go, including African savannah cats, meerkats, wolf dogs, horses, donkeys, pigs and more.

We are open to the public seven days a week. Admission charges and donations are the sole funding source for the residents. There are no shareholders or owners.

What we do, what we don't

The lines

We do
  • Rescue unwanted primates and other animals.
  • Provide a settled, lifelong home in the Brecon Beacons.
  • Welcome visitors to see how the work gets done.
  • Support conservation work in Angola and elsewhere.
We do not
  • We do not breed any of our animals.
  • We never import from the wild.
  • We do not supply animals to other organisations.
  • We do not loan animals out for media work or photography.
