Story

How Toto came to Wales

Toto was captured as an infant in West Africa around 1966. He was brought to Birmingham in 1966 and moved to Drayton Manor near Tamworth in January 1967, where he lived for nearly 50 years with his companion Topsy until she died in 2005. He celebrated his fiftieth birthday at Drayton Manor in 2016 and became known as the Tamworth Legend.

There were many tears the day Toto left Drayton Manor on 31 October 2016, with a big send-off, and our Facebook page filled with comments about him when we announced he had arrived. He has had several companions here: Tubman, who died in January 2019, and Jason, who died of inoperable lymphoma in 2020. On 13 October 2020 he was paired with Kaspar, who arrived from Loro Parque after losing his own mate Uschi to lymphoma.

Toto loves being close to visitors through the big glass windows. He has been known to entertain everyone watching, sometimes more than the keepers would prefer.
