About

About the species

Four species of capuchin are commonly recognised: White Fronted, White Faced, Brown Tufted and Wedge Capped. They are widely considered the most intelligent of the New World monkeys.

Some of our capuchins arrived from situations where they had been kept as pets. When they first came to us they could not open coconuts. They can now do it in under a minute.

Capuchins have been trained elsewhere to assist disabled people, including microwaving food, cleaning, and answering the door. We do not train them in any way at the sanctuary.
